The first thing to understand about Wrangler is what it isn't: it is not an offload tool. It doesn't copy cards, verify checksums, or manage backups — and that's deliberate. Offloading is a solved problem with excellent dedicated tools, and the golden rule of production media is that copying and verifying come first, always. Wrangler is the step after — the cleanup that turns a safely offloaded card into something pleasant to edit from.
Here's where it sits in a sane pipeline.
Step 1 — Offload, with verification
Copy the card to your working drive using whatever you trust — a checksum-verified offload app, your DIT's process, or a careful manual copy you then verify. If the project matters, follow the classic 3-2-1 shape: multiple copies, more than one kind of storage, one copy somewhere else.
Step 2 — Verify before you touch anything
Confirm your backup is real: the copy completed, the sizes and checksums match, and the files open. This is the point of no return for the physical card — nothing downstream should happen until you'd be comfortable formatting it. (Whether you actually format is between you and your insurance premiums.)
Step 3 — Wrangle the working copy
Now the copied card on your working drive is a maze of PRIVATE / M4ROOT / CLIPS001 folders. This — and only this — is what Wrangler touches:
- •Point it at the copied card folder (or a parent folder holding several cards — it treats each as its own card).
- •Preview the exact before-and-after tree.
- •Wrangle: media rises to the top level, unrecognized files are set aside in Strays, system junk goes to the Trash, empty folders disappear.
- •A report and an undo receipt are saved automatically — written before anything moved, so the whole run is reversible later.
Never point Wrangler at the original camera card or your only copy. The app will do its job safely — but a cleanup tool has no business being anywhere near your last copy of anything. That rule predates Wrangler and outlives it.
Step 4 — Edit from clean cards
What lands in your NLE's media browser is a flat, readable card: clips at the top, named folders you actually recognize, no folder archaeology. Assistants can find things. Relinks are less fragile. The project you hand off looks the same as the last one you handed off.
