A Letter From Drew

I made Media Card Wrangler because I wanted it for myself.

I've been a professional editor, commercial director, and owner of a production company for 16 years. In that time, my company has made thousands of videos. Commercials, interviews, documentaries, branded content, social spots, you name it!.

Throughout those years, I've always been annoyed with messy media cards on my hard drives. If you work with cameras, you know the look. A card full of nested folders, camera metadata, sidecars, empty folders, and then, somewhere buried in the digital haystack, the actual media you need.

For years, I would clean these up manually before bringing footage into an edit. I'd dig through the card, move the actual media where I wanted it, delete metadata and preview files (I literally never use them), and then remove empty folders. It was annoying. A little time-consuming. And honestly, it was a little nerve-wracking. I'd find myself triple-checking folders before deleting anything, even when I knew they were empty.

But once it was done? A majestic, beautiful, clean card. No folder maze. No clutter. Just the files I needed for my edit.

The funny thing is, in 16 years of professional production work, I have never once needed the extra camera card structure for my own editing workflow. Not once. Yes, I know some workflows absolutely do use metadata, sidecars, Avid files, XMLs. And a couple workflows actually want the original folder structure. That's real, and Wrangler is built to respect that. But for a lot of us (I'd argue most of us), the actual media files are the thing we need, and the rest is just doo doo.

So I decided to build a tool to do the job I had been doing by hand for years.

Media Card Wrangler finds your files, moves them to the top level of the card, cleans up empty folders, creates a report, and gives you an undo receipt in case you want to roll things back. It's not an offloading app. It's not trying to replace your backup workflow. It's just a magical utility app for people who like their media cards tidy before they start editing.

I built it first for myself. I use it every day. Then I figured there were probably a lot of other editors, filmmakers, DITs, shooters, YouTubers, hobbyists, and fellow folder-cleanliness weirdos who might want the same thing.

So here it is!

A simple but intelligent tool from someone who has spent way too many years staring at messy camera cards and thinking, “There has got to be a better way.”
